When the seasons change it seems all countries have their unique quirks and customs to mark the passage of time. In Japan, the arrival of spring means the blooming of cherry blossoms, which is reason enough to get the office together and sit under a tree all night getting sloshed on sake, sing loudly and maybe paw the new OLs. Next door in China, the mid-autumn is welcomed with the faint hope that the moon this time will be bright enough to force enough light through the smog and under its feeble glow people will be able to enjoy their moon cakes – which, by the way, are definitely an acquired taste. The news from the Western Front continues to be grim and annoying in its persistence. I noticed amongst all the headlines that the head of the IMF’s European department just quit after one year in the role. You would think this a pretty important job but Antonio Borges apparently had more pressing things to do. It turns out like the new head of the ECB, Mario Draghi, Borges is also a former vice chairman at Goldman Sachs International (current chairman: Hank Paulson). Otmar Issing, former member of the Bundesbank also worked for the big squid. A little more digging reveals that the tentacles of this secret fraternal organization also reach to and include Mario Monti, the newly minted Prime Minister of Italy.

What am I Doing Here?

I have started to get a lot of the information I wanted up on this blog. I am explaining this now because since my blog went live last week, colleagues, friends and clients have all asked me the same question: what am I doing?

The Reason

Having worked in markets on and off (and I believe off is better) for 18 years, I have had the occasion to train a lot of people who were new to the business. This was true at UBS and CLSA and now at Mirae, my current employer. I have noticed that newbies all seem to share the same misconceptions, bad habits and wide-eyed questions. Having just put two new green salesmen, Daniel H. and Jeff T. through my rigorous training program, they are now on the phones bringing in millions. Of laughs.
